 NaOH, commonly known as caustic soda or lye, is a highly caustic inorganic compound. It is a white, odorless solid available in flakes, pellets, or granules, and is also widely used in aqueous solutions (e.g., 32% or 50% liquid caustic soda). As a strong alkali, it is highly soluble in water, releasing significant heat upon dissolution. NaOH is hygroscopic, absorbing moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, which can lead to the formation of sodium carbonate if improperly stored.

Solid NaOH is typically packed in 25 kg polyethylene-lined woven bags, 500 kg big bags (FIBCs), or steel drums to prevent moisture absorption. Liquid caustic soda is transported in ISO tanks, HDPE/IBC totes (1000L), or tanker trucks. Due to its corrosive nature, packaging must comply with UN1823 (Class 8, Corrosive) regulations. Transport requires hazardous material (HAZMAT) labeling, and storage must be in dry, well-ventilated areas away from acids and metals like aluminum.
