Properties: Potassium nitrate is a colorless, transparent rhombic crystal or powder or granular substance with a relative density of 2.109 and a melting point of 334ºC. When heated to approximately 400ºC, it releases oxygen and transforms into potassium nitrite.
It decomposes into potassium oxide and nitrogen oxide upon further heating. Readily soluble in water, liquid ammonia and glycerol; Insoluble in anhydrous ethanol and ether.
